In North America “coming of age” usually means getting to borrow the car or turning the legal drinking age. Our adolescence are becoming adults with no intentionally created joyous celebration. In cultures around the world this is a pivotal ceremony to help root young adults in their communities and to foster the growth of their self-esteem and independence.
