Around The World Outreach Program
Csehetvalva Romania

Our church is partnered with a Unitarian church in the small rural community of Csehetvalva in Romania.

Romania is a very poor country and this small farming community has little if any resources available to it so each year we reach out to provide them with much needed cash. This cash is used to support the one vehicle in town that doubles as an ambulance in case of medical emergencies. Our funds also provide medical supplies and support for the phone and internet hookup without which the families of Csehetvalva would be truly isolated. Recently we assisted in repairs on the church and also on the minister’s home which are both very old buildings and in need of ongoing upkeep.

The roots of our Unitarian faith began in the mid 1500’s in this Transylvanian community which was once part of Hungary. At a time when free thinkers and religious reformists were being persecuted throughout Europe, the Hungarian king offered freedom of religious worship and sanctuary to the members of our faith.

Although the roots of free religious thought began there, still, over subsequent years Romania has suffered greatly under totalitarian rule and religious persecution and members of our faith have had a very difficult time indeed .

So it is with deep feelings of respect and of history that Unitarian communities across Canada and the United States are partnered with villages and churches in Romania. More details on the broader Partner Church program can be found at www.uupcc.org

Inn from the Cold

This is a program which supports people who are homeless by providing them with a warm, safe place to sleep in the cold winter months.

The Unitarian Fellowship of Kelowna affirms and promotes the inherent worth and dignity of every person by supporting this program in it’s effort to provide a warm, respectful shelter for those who would otherwise be trying to survive outside in sub zero temperatures.

Various churches have provided the space for Inn from the Cold over the past five years and a number of churches and individuals have provided the volunteers who stay overnight with the guests.

Our Fellowship continues to participate with overnight volunteers, with volunteers who do laundry (all those sheets a pillow cases) and strong financial assistance.
