Sunday Sept 25th on Zoom – Jan Greenwood and Karen Christie – Reconciliation and the Doctrine of Discovery (DoD)

In recognition of Canada’s second annual National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on September 30, we invite you to learn more about the Doctrine of Discovery.  This papal bull was brought to the attention of Canadians during the visit of Pope Francis to Canada in late July this year. In 2021/22 several Victoria UUs participated in a study group on the film Doctrine of Discovery: Stolen Lands, Strong Hearts, produced by the Anglican Church. We will share with you our increased understanding of the implications of the Doctrine of Discovery on ongoing efforts towards reconciliation.  You may be interested in viewing the 67-minute video on which the study group focussed: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mQwkB1hn5E8

Jan Greenwood and Karen Christie are members of Capital and have served on the Board of Directors as well as other committees.  They are also members of the Truth Healing and Reconciliation team of UUs in Victoria (THRUU), which is a small group from both UU congregations in Victoria. The mandate of THRUU is to facilitate educational opportunities in the interests of contributing to the reconciliation process. Jan and Karen participated in the study group on the Doctrine of Discovery as well as the earlier groups for the Indigenous Film Discussion Series.
