{"id":2217,"date":"2013-08-09T20:42:17","date_gmt":"2013-08-09T20:42:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/saltspringunitarians.com\/?p=2217"},"modified":"2013-08-09T20:42:17","modified_gmt":"2013-08-09T20:42:17","slug":"february-9th-2014-black-history-month-with-sue-averill","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitariancongregation.org\/saltspring\/february-9th-2014-black-history-month-with-sue-averill\/","title":{"rendered":"February 9th, 2014: Black History Month with Sue Averill"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>Sue Averill has been a folk musician for over 50 years and taught music in elementary schools in Nanaimo for nearly 20 years before retiring. \u00a0She has always felt that the music of a culture reflects its work, its beliefs and deepest need to communicate. \u00a0Music hits both head and heart, so is the ultimate form of communication among people. \u00a0Sue&#8217;s choices of music and performances are all about this.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>In &#8220;Songs of the Underground Railway&#8221; Sue shows how the music of the black slaves was used to pass along vital information they needed in order to make the perilous journey to freedom. \u00a0The congregation is invited to sing along, as the songs are familiar or easy to learn.
