March 30th, 2014: Keith Dalton “The Absence of God, the Search for God and the Rediscovery of God”

Many of us can acknowledge the difficulty in perceiving the Divine at least at some point in our lives, if not presently. We can call it the sense of the absence of God. Our approach will begin by asking what is it we feel we are missing. Through group participation and brief discussion we will share what we mean by the word God. What was or is it that we sensed was missing. And how does one search for something one presumes not to know anything about?   What other questions are associated with this search for understanding?  In which directions has our search taken us? And finally we will share the ways in which our questions have become resolved to reveal the unquestionable presence of God.   In my view, God is simply not the kind of ‘thing’ that can be absent or even doubted, once we have a better understanding of what the word God actually refers to.  For the speaker, this was never a minor or merely philosophical issue.  His search was intense and unavoidable and the resolving understanding was a life changing insight.  Just knowing such enormous questions can be resolved can be a relief so hopefully we can at least touch on that in this brief session.
